The geographer Paolo dal Pozzo Toscanelli '1397-1482' upheld the notion that the earth was spherical, which inspired Columbus's enterprise. Famous Paulos include Paulo Uccello (1397-1475), who painted the Battaglia di San Romano (1456), and the painter Paolo Veronese (1528-1588), one of the greatest exponents of the Venetian Renaissance.
